About next production, Arsenic and Old Lace...

Ever feel that craziness runs rampant in your family? That’s the case with a fast-talking young drama critic who discovers that his two charming, seemingly harmless old aunts are hiding a dreadful secret. And then there’s his uncle, who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt…and a criminal cousin looking for a hideaway from the police.

Such is the setting for Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesselring.  Auditions will be held at The Edge Theater, 310 Marlboro St., Keene. Please contact Kim Dupuis at theedgeensemble@aol.com to schedule an audition.  Performance dates are November 13, 14, 15 and November 19, 20, 21, 22. Callbacks are going to be held in the near future.

There are roles for 13 men and women, ages young to old.  There will be no double casting, so this play offers excellent opportunities for new actors to work with The Edge. The characters are:

Abby Brewster, the more aggressive of the two aunts, who “helps” elderly men by poisoning them with elderberry wine.

Martha Brewster, Abby’s sister, more timid, who helps brew the arsenic-laced wine.

Mortimer Brewster, Abby and Martha’s nephew, who tries to hide his aunts’ secret.

Teddy Brewster, the sisters’ brother who lives with them, and thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, given to racing out of the room yelling “Charr.r.r.ge!”

Jonathan Brewster, a criminal nephew who’s had plastic surgery and looks like Boris Karloff.

Dr. Einstein, Jonathan’s accomplice, a nervous plastic surgeon who is often drunk.

Elaine Harper, Mortimer’s fiancée and the daughter of the local minister.

Rev. Dr. Harper, Elaine’s father.

Officer Brophy, a friendly local police officer.

Officer Klein, a friendly local police officer.

Lieutenant Rooney, a tough commanding police officer.

Mr. Gibbs, an elderly man looking for a room to rent.

Mr. Witherspoon, superintendent of Happy Dale Sanitarium.
